Apple Vision Pro will help get to the bottom of colonoscopy cancer detection

Apple Vision Pro tested in colonoscopy procedures

In a research study, some doctors will wear Apple Vision Pro during colonoscopies to explore how spatial computing can support real-time cancer detection.

We've been hearing about potential case uses for the Apple Vision Pro in a medical setting for a while now — probably longer than it has existed as a purchasable product.

We've seen medical professionals suggest the Apple Vision Pro could be an invaluable tool for anesthesiologists, nursing managers, and general practitioners. Surgeons are already using it for keyhole surgeries in India.

But now the Apple Vision Pro is heading somewhere new — the endoscopy suite. Or, at least, one specific endoscopy suite.

Cosmo Pharmaceuticals, in collaboration with Chicago's Rush University, aims to evaluate the use of spatial computing and AI tools during colonoscopy procedures. It combines Apple's spatial computing headset with Medtronic's GI Genius, an AI tool designed to detect potentially cancerous polyps during colonoscopies.

The GI Genius has already proven itself an effective tool in its own right, increasing adenoma detection rate by more than 14 percent. Pairing it with the Apple Vision Pro could, in theory, make for more efficient and intuitive procedures.

During the procedure, doctors will don the Apple Vision Pro, outfitted with GI Genius. That means, during the procedure, the Apple Vision Pro will overlay real-time info directly into the doctor's field of view, negating the need to look at separate monitors or screens.

The study is set to begin in July 2025 at the Rush University Medical Center. It will be led by Dr. Irving Waxman, who serves as the James R. Lowenstine Professor and Chief of the Division of Digestive Diseases & Nutrition at Rush.

I hope the goggles are much smaller by the time I get my next colonoscopy. 😖

“get to the bottom of colonoscopy”

🤣

I hope they use a lot of lube.  That Vision Pro is huge.
