Apple TV+ hit drama 'Severance' is returning for a third season, but while no date has been announced, it's in development.
The hugely successful "Severance" has just powered Apple to its largest-ever number of Emmy nominations, and Apple TV+ head of programming has been talking about its next season.
Speaking to Variety about whether this next season three years like the last one, Apple TV+ head of programming said hopefully not.
"No one wants it to be another three year gap," he said. "I don't believe that we have a production start date yet, but we're moving in that direction."
Even at early stages of preproduction, though, writer Dan Erickson and executive producers including director Ben Stiller, are reportedly developing the next run.
"I think everyone's just going to take a deep breath and enjoy where we're at," continued Cherniss. "I know they're going as quickly as they can."
"When you have the success that a show like 'Severance' has, you want to make sure you deliver on every level when the show comes back, and that takes some time," he said. "But they're on it, and I think I'm feeling really good about where we're at."
Apple's record-breaking Emmy nomination success saw it nominated for 81 awards. "Severance" alone got 27 nominations, including ones for writing, acting, and directing.
Significantly, Apple achieved this while submitting 26 shows for consideration. In comparison, Netflix submitted 113 shows and earned 120 nominations.
Note that accounts of the total number of Emmy nominations for any studio always vary across different sources. This is chiefly because of commercials, which some sources credit to their production company, while others to the client.
The winners of the 77th annual Television Academy awards will be announced across three ceremonies. Winners of the technical categories such as editing will be revealed on September 6, 2025 and September 7, 2025, while ones such as acting and directing will be announced on September 14, 2025.
The first and second seasons of "Severance" are streaming now on Apple TV+
