Creators who need to expand storage on their iPhone have another option in Transcend's ESD420, a pocket-sized SSD with a MagSafe-compatible attachment point.
The ESD420 is capable of speeds up to 20Gbps over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 when used with compatible hardware. It uses SLC cache technology for read and write performance up to 2,000MB/s.
Apple devices don't support USB 3.2 Gen 2.2, so transfers on iPhone or Mac will be limited to 10 gigabits per second max. Transcend says the ESD420 supports 4K ProRes video recording directly from iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max models.
External storage for professional iPhone workflows
The ESD420 uses a magnetic design to secure itself to iPhones or other MagSafe-compatible accessories. That design supports mobile workflows by enabling direct file transfers and video capture on location without complicated setups.
Transcend positions the ESD420 as a tool for professionals who need reliable, portable storage that keeps up with demanding production schedules. The drive also meets U.S. military standard MIL-STD-810G for drop resistance.
Cross-platform compatibility and security
The ESD420 includes a USB Type-C cable and supports plug-and-play use with Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, Mac, and game consoles. Users can move large projects between devices easily, making it more than just an iPhone accessory.
For security-conscious professionals, the drive features 256-bit AES hardware encryption. Transcend's free Elite software, available for Mac but not iPhone, lets users set passwords and includes an OTP function for password recovery if needed.
Pricing, finishes, and availability
Transcend hasn't announced official pricing for the ESD420. The portable MagSafe SSD will be available through the and authorized retailers.
Buyers can choose between Champagne Gold and Space Gray finishes. Capacity options will range up to 4TB. The drive includes a five-year limited warranty. We've requested a review unit.
