visionOS 26 is a smallish update overall by comparison to everything else going on during WWDC 2025. It didn't need a whole new design paradigm, so instead, it got some much-needed updates and a new spatial widgets feature.
Apple is slowly unveiling what it believes is the future of spatial computing. Apple Intelligence will help users create 3D scenes from 2D images, which also helps transform websites in spatial browsing mode in Safari.
Software is being further integrated into the world around the user with widgets. Embed clocks, calendars, now-playing screens, and more into surfaces around your home and they'll stay there through a restart.
Socializing and working collaboratively are also much improved thanks to more realistic Personas and Shared Spatial Experiences. Two Apple Vision Pro users in the same room can view the same content anchored in space.
There's a lot of small changes to visionOS 26, including new device support like spatial controllers. Developers also have more APIs to work with while creating apps and content.
Some feature highlights in visionOS 26:
- Support for PSVR2 controllers
- Logitech Muse pen support
- Look to scroll
- Native playback of 180-degree, 360-degree, and wide field-of-view content
- Spatial browsing in Safari
- Transform photos into spatial scenes
- Spatial widgets placed in and on surfaces
- Redesigned Control Center
- Unlock iPhone while using Apple Vision Pro
- Relay calls from iPhone
- Sort Home View with folders
The WWDC keynote has barely concluded, and there are a lot of details to uncover about all of Apple's latest operating systems. Stay tuned for more details on this page for visionOS 26.
Everything below this point has been preserved for historical purposes. It was written before WWDC 2025 and addresses the rumors and expectations around the new visionOS update.
visionOS is going to take center stage during WWDC 2025, but not because of the updates to its own operating system. There's a chance Apple will spend very little time discussing visionOS 26, but users should still expect some upgrades.
A last-minute rumor and some discovered code suggest Apple will be shifting its naming of every operating system to be based on the year. While visionOS 26 will be released in 2025, it'll spend a majority of its life in 2026.
The name shift is arriving alongside a rumored ecosystem-wide redesign. Everything from iOS 26 to macOS 26 could get visionOS-like elements with glassy and reactive surfaces.
However, visionOS already looks like visionOS, so it could be a relatively small year by comparison to the other operating systems. Rumors are scarce about the update, but some tidbits have come out.
visionOS 26: a gaming focus
The most solid rumor about visionOS 26 so far is an older one. It seems Apple will finally bring VR controller support to Apple Vision Pro, which Apple is referring to as spatial controllers.
Third-party controllers are expected to be supported directly within the OS, similar to how other gaming controllers work. It means owners of the PSVR 2 controllers should be able to pair them to Apple Vision Pro for certain games.
Many modern VR games are perfectly functional with just hand tracking, but things get odd for some games, while others are downright impossible to adapt. Rhythm games like Beat Saber could easily work with just hands, but the haptic feedback and physical grip of the controller make the game feel more immersive.
Then there are other games, like ones that involve shooting a gun or activating buttons. Finger and motion gestures can replicate these functions, but they'll never be as precise as pressing a physical button.
Apple is also rumored to be working on an "Apple Games" app that brings Game Center, app launching, and social features into one app. Think of the Backbone app, but from Apple.
More visionOS 26 features
Little has been rumored about visionOS itself. Expect elements from iOS 26 to make their way into visionOS alongside some quality-of-life updates.
Apple is also expected to make more, if not all, of its apps native for the visionOS platform. New apps could join the OS, like Apple Journal.
Apple Intelligence could also be a significant part of the event and included in the visionOS 26 update. There's likely a lot that won't be discussed during the keynote, but will be discovered throughout the beta process.
Betas will begin on June 9 after the keynote and release throughout the summer. Apple is expected to release visionOS 26 in the fall after the iPhone 17 reveal.
